About Us
Who we are
Horseshoe Aviary & Rescue began in 2019, when my mom (Donna) and I (Maggie) brought home our first feathered friend, Gilmore. We drove him from Quebec to Kitchener, Ontario, and our lives were instantly changed forever. Seeing how interactive and affectionate he was inspired us to ensure others can experience that same love from their pet.
We decided to start breeding small birds, including finches and canaries. This was a perfect way for us to begin our aviary journey. We quickly moved on to breeding larger birds such as lineolated parakeets, lovebirds, parrotlets, and more. Engaging with our community and hearing the stories and experiences of others, we decided we could do the most for our clients by focusing on ethical practices and proper animal education.
We now breed small and medium-sized parrots while advocating for ethical breeding practices and healthy animals. We work closely with a few other aviaries that share our values, and we strive to offer the best experiences and education to anyone who comes our way.
Our aviary is run out of our home, which is why you can’t find an address for our business. To protect our privacy, we will only give our address to clients visiting their bird, taking their bird home, or coming in for grooming. We ask that those with access to our address not share it, as we do not offer walk-ins.
Donna handles all of our day-to-day chores like handfeeding and socializing our baby birds. At any given time, she can be feeding up to 40 babies!
Maggie specializes in rehabilitating our rehome and rescues. Most of our rehomes come to us with behavioural issues or trauma, and often express that with aggression. Maggie’s job is to teach and earn the trust of the birds so that they can live a happy life.
